Your Packing Questions Answered

How To Pack Books And Tape A Moving Box?

Books are deceptively heavy. Always use a small moving box (1.5 cubic feet). Larger boxes are difficult to lift, do not tack well, and can tear at the bottom. To keep boxes from falling out at the bottom, we recommend taping 3 times along the seam. For extra support one time perpendicular to the middle or along the edges.

PRO PACKING TIP!

Place heavier books flat at the bottom, then layer lighter items like paperbacks or magazines on top. Pack them full and fill empty spaces with crumpled packing paper to keep them from shifting. NEVER PACK A BOOK WITH THE BINDINGFACING UPWARDS! Doing so is not a strong and careful way to pack them. Label the box on the side.

How To Tape A Box

Professional Movers often use a heavy-duty dish pack box (double-walled medium carton) when packing dishes and glassware. Most people may opt and prefer a heavy duty medium box, sometimes using small boxes for extra fragile items.

Begin with a base layer of loosely crumpled packing paper at the bottom to absorb shock and weight from stacked items. Wrap each dish or glass individually and place them carefully — plates should stand vertically like records, while glasses go upright. Keep the paper loose, not tight, so it cushions instead of compressing. As you layer, always fill voids with additional crumpled paper to prevent movement. This method ensures your fragile kitchenware is fully protected and stable throughout the move. Sometimes it is best to leave large vases, lamps, ceramic pots, in their own box.

Whether you are in Winchester or not, as a additional service, we can send someone to your home to help get trained up and packing.

Base Layer of Packed Box

For folded clothes, choose medium or large heavy-duty boxes (3.0–4.5 cubic feet). Like the book boxes, its important to get a good seal on the bottom. Place heavier folded items like jeans or sweaters at the bottom, lighter clothing on top, and fill gaps with paper to prevent shifting.

For hanging garments, wardrobe boxes with metal hanging bars are ideal. They allow you to transfer clothes directly from closet to box without wrinkling. Mover Dudes can bring these wardrobes preassembled to use on move day, just ask!

WORDS OF EXPERIENCE: Bagged clothing is best in heavy duty contractor bags, as is a perfectly good way to transport clothes if you don’t mind some wrinkles. All the same, pack those clothing bags nicely.

SOMETIMES: You can leave clothing in sturdy, not huge, and not overly heavy dressers. If space is an issue, consider leaving clothing in drawers or removing till you get the dresser loaded.

When packing electronics such as TVs, monitors, or stereos, use the original box if you still have it; or like Mover Dudes does, a specialty TV/picture box sized to fit. Place a thin layer of crumpled paper at the bottom for cushioning, then wrap the screen in bubble wrap or a padded blanket. Keep cords, remotes, and accessories in small zip-lock bags, label each bag clearly, and tape or pack them alongside the device.

For more complicated setups like stereos or gaming systems, take photos of the wiring before disconnecting — this makes reassembly quick and accurate. Fill any voids with loose cushioning to prevent shifting.

Parts Bag For Packing Small Items

Microwaves can typically travel fine if your using thicker blankets. Most other small appliances should really be within boxes (microwaves travel better in a box). Small appliances such as blenders, toasters, and coffee makers should be packed in medium heavy-duty boxes (around 3.0 cubic feet).

Begin with a thin layer of loosely crumpled paper at the bottom, then wrap each appliance in bubble wrap or a towel for protection. Place items upright and add loose paper between them to prevent shifting. Larger appliances should each have their own box with extra padding around the sides.

Vacuums, however, are durable enough to travel “loose” in the moving truck without boxing, while smaller countertop items are safer in cartons. If you don’t think it is good enough, its not!
